How to rent your car to an Uber or Lyft driver

Uber and Lyft have vehicle requirements — age, condition, number of doors, and a passed inspection. A car that can't be approved on the platform can't earn for the driver, which means it can't earn for you. Confirm eligibility first.

A personal auto policy does not cover renting your car out, and it does not cover rideshare driving. Doing this on a personal policy risks a denied claim and a canceled policy. You need coverage appropriate to renting a vehicle for commercial rideshare use, and this is worth a conversation with a commercial agent before you start.

You're putting a valuable asset in someone's hands for many hours a week. At minimum verify their identity and driving record, and confirm they're a genuinely active rideshare driver — some fleets simply ask the driver to submit their Uber or Lyft trip history as proof.

Use a real rental agreement that names the rent, deposit, late-fee policy, insurance responsibility, and what happens on non-payment. Sign it electronically and keep a copy.
