What a rideshare car rental agreement should include

When you rent a car to a rideshare driver, the written agreement is the only thing standing between a smooth rental and an expensive dispute. A handshake and a group text are not an agreement — they are a hope.
This is a plain-English overview of what a solid rental agreement covers. It is not legal language: your actual lease should be written or reviewed by an attorney licensed in your state.
The parties and the vehicle
Name the lessor (you or your company) and the lessee (the driver), and identify the exact vehicle by make, model, year, and VIN. Vague parties and vague vehicles are the first thing that unravels in a dispute.
Rent, deposit, and payment terms
Spell out the weekly rent, when it is due, how it is collected, and the refundable deposit amount. State the late-fee and grace policy explicitly, and how and when the deposit is returned.
Permitted use and mileage
Define what the car may be used for (rideshare and personal use, typically) and anything prohibited. If you cap mileage or restrict who else may drive the vehicle, put it in writing here.
Insurance and liability
State who carries insurance and what coverage is required. Renting a vehicle for rideshare use is a commercial activity that personal policies exclude, so this clause matters — and it is one to get reviewed professionally.
Non-payment, default, and recovery
Describe what happens when rent isn't paid: the late fee, the cure period, and your right to recover the vehicle. Clear default terms are what turn a bad situation into a defined process instead of a standoff.
Signatures and an audit trail
Use e-signature with a real audit trail (who signed, when, from where) and archive an executed copy of every lease. An agreement you can't prove was signed is hard to enforce.
